Same-Day Crowns in Ham Lake, MN: Restore Your Tooth in a Single Visit

A same-day crown lets you leave the office with a permanent, custom-fitted crown in one appointment — no temporary crown, no messy impressions, and no weeks of waiting for a lab. At Ham Lake Dental, we use CEREC technology to scan, design, mill, and bond your new crown in about one to two hours, so a damaged tooth can be fully restored before you walk out the door.

What is a same-day crown?

A same-day crown is a tooth-colored ceramic restoration that is designed and fabricated right in our office using CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics). Instead of taking a physical mold, sending it to an outside lab, and fitting you with a temporary crown for two to three weeks, we capture a precise digital impression of your tooth and mill the final crown from a solid block of dental ceramic on site. The result is a strong, natural-looking crown completed in a single visit. You can see the full process on our same-day CEREC crowns page.

How does the same-day crown process work?

The entire visit is streamlined into one appointment:

  1. Exam and preparation. We numb the area, examine the tooth, and gently remove any decay or damaged structure to prepare it for the crown.
  2. Digital scan. A small handheld camera captures a 3D digital impression of your tooth and bite — no putty trays required.
  3. Design. Using the scan, we design a crown that matches the exact shape, size, and alignment of your natural tooth.
  4. Milling. An in-office milling unit carves your crown from a ceramic block while you wait, usually in a matter of minutes.
  5. Fit and bond. We check the fit and your bite, make any fine adjustments, and permanently bond the crown into place.

Are same-day crowns as strong as traditional lab crowns?

Yes. Same-day crowns are milled from high-grade dental ceramic that stands up to normal chewing forces and is color-matched to blend with the teeth around it. Because the crown is created from a precise digital scan, the fit is highly accurate, which helps protect the tooth underneath and keeps the margins sealed against bacteria. With good oral hygiene and regular checkups, a well-made crown can last many years — you can read more in our post on how long dental crowns last.

When do you need a dental crown?

A crown fully caps a tooth to restore its strength, shape, and function. Your dentist may recommend one when a tooth is too compromised for a simple filling. Common reasons include:

  • A large cavity or a failing filling that no longer supports the tooth
  • A cracked, fractured, or badly worn tooth
  • A tooth that has had a root canal and needs protection — see whether you need a crown after a root canal
  • Restoring a dental implant with a lifelike replacement tooth
  • Reinforcing a tooth after extensive cosmetic or restorative treatment

What are the benefits of choosing a same-day crown?

  • One appointment. Your tooth is fully restored in a single visit instead of two or three.
  • No temporary crown. You avoid the discomfort, dietary limits, and risk of a temporary crown coming loose.
  • Greater comfort. Digital scanning replaces the gag-inducing putty trays used for traditional molds.
  • Precision fit. Digital design produces a crown engineered to match your bite and surrounding teeth.
  • Natural appearance. Ceramic materials reflect light much like real enamel for a seamless look.
  • Fewer injections and less time off work. One numbing appointment, one trip to the office.

Same-day crowns versus other restorations

A full crown is not always the answer. When a tooth has only moderate damage, a more conservative restoration such as an inlay or onlay may preserve more of your natural tooth. When one or more teeth are missing entirely, a dental bridge or implant may be the better option. During your exam, we will recommend the approach that protects your tooth while meeting your goals and budget.

Frequently asked questions about same-day crowns

How long does it take to get a same-day crown?

Most same-day crown appointments take about one to two hours from start to finish, including the scan, milling, and final placement.

Do same-day crowns hurt?

The procedure is comfortable. We numb the tooth before preparing it, and most patients feel only mild pressure during the visit and little to no sensitivity afterward.

Will my insurance cover a same-day crown?

Dental insurance typically covers same-day crowns at the same rate as traditional crowns, since the final restoration is the same. Coverage varies by plan, so our team is happy to review your benefits before treatment.

How long do same-day crowns last?

With routine brushing, flossing, and dental visits, a same-day crown can last many years. Avoiding habits like chewing ice or grinding helps extend its lifespan. Learn more about crown longevity here.

Can I get a same-day crown after a root canal?

Often, yes. A tooth treated with a root canal usually needs a crown to protect it, and in many cases that crown can be placed the same day the tooth is ready.
